Just Jinjer (Previously known as Just Jin*g*er)
Just Jinjer is one of South Africa’s most famous rock bands. This band has generated sales of more than 250,000 copies of their CDs. The band has performed alongside many international acts, namely; Def Leppard, Counting Crows, and U2. You may have heard their famous song “Shallow Waters” on the radio.
Fokofpolisiekar
The Afrikaans Rock band, Fokofpolisiekar was formed in early 2003. Their controversial name was picked at first to shock the Afrikaner community and as a result, they are now also referred to as Polisiekar or FPK. The band has a self-titled song “Fokofpolisiekar” – one of their most popular songs.
Springbok Nude Girls
The Springbok Nude Girls introduced many genres to their songs, such as punk rock, heavy metal, acid jazz, and ska, which gave the band leverage among the South African youth in the 1990s. Their innovation made them one of the most celebrated South African rock bands in the ’90s. Since then they have won many awards such as the South African Music Award (SAMA) for the Best Rock Album.
aKing
aKING is one of the most popular Afrikaans Rock bands alongside FPK in South Africa. The group was formed by Jaco ‘Snakehead’ Venter and Hunter Kennedy as well as Hennie Van Halen (bass) and Laudo Liebenberg (vocals and guitar) in Bellville, in late 2007. Their first studio album “Dutch Courage” debuted in 2008 with their famous English song “Safe as Houses” on it. They then went on to release their next album titled “Against All Odds” in 2009 which did just as well.
Prime Circle
Prime Circle is another great South African rock band, based in Johannesburg. They have released 7 studio albums, all of which have achieved either gold or platinum status in their local market. The band has expanded its audience to an international level namely the UK and Europe. They have also won several South African Music Awards for their albums and music videos, which includes Best Music Video of the Year at the SAMA XXI. This is in addition to being nominated for the MTV Africa Music Awards for Best Pop & Alternative Act and Best Music Video of the Year. This nomination was for their single DOORS, off their album “Let The Night In”. They were also nominated for Best Artist in African Rock at the All Africa Music Awards.
Zebra and Giraffe
Zebra and Giraffe is an alternative rock band from South Africa. The South African band’s debut album, “Collected Memories”, was released in May 2008 and is a SAMA-award-winning album. Over the years members have come and gone and the band’s sound has changed from straight-up, radio-hit rock to a darker place and is more daring which has led to most of the band’s success. This unique band has also won the MTV Africa Music Award for Best Alternative.
