These rock festivals are made popular through the showcasing of the biggest and best rock bands and were created in celebration of the genre. These 6 festivals should be added to any fan of rock ‘n roll’s bucket list right away.
Austin City Limits Music Festival
The Austin City Limits Music Festival was created in association with the popular PBS music series of the same name and provides fans with the opportunity to see bands from the both the mainstreams and margins of rock. Typically taking place over a weekend in September, the Austin City Limits Music Festival takes placed in Zilker Park in Austin, Texas.
Lollapalooza Festival
Founded originally as a travelling summer festival in the early 1990’s by Perry Farrell the frontman of Jane’s Addiction, Lollapalooza Festival was relaunched in 2005 as a weekend-long summer event to be held annually at Grant Park in Chicago. While Lollapalooza began as an event showcasing strictly rock bands, the event has included a wider musical focus since it’s relaunch and recent editions have included everyone from Kanye West to the Hold Steady.
Download Festival
Held annually since 2003, the Download Festival takes place over a weekend in June at Donington Park in Leicestershire, United Kingdom. Presented across multiple stages, Download Festival is a non-stop party from start to finish – much like your favourite Canadian mobile casino. Every year, thousands of people from all over the world descend upon Donington Park to witness one of the greatest celebrations of rock ‘n roll with both up-and-coming groups and veterans of the genre.
Reading Festival
Taking place annually over the last weekend in August at Little John’s Farm in central Reading, United Kingdom, the Reading Festival has over the years presented some of the biggest names in the business including Queens of the Stone Age, Blink-182, Guns N’ Roses, and Paramore. One of the most memorable moments took place at the 1992 Reading Festival when Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was brought to the stage in a wheelchair, confirming the rumours of his declining health owing to drug addiction.
Rock on the Range
Held annually over a weekend in May in Columbus, Ohio, the Rock on the Range festival brings together hard rock bands and metal bands. Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, and Hinder are just a few of the big names which have graced the Rock on the Range stages and the event was first held in 2007.
Roskilde Festival
First held in 1971, the Roskilde Festival is one of the oldest and most celebrated rock festivals in the world. Held annually in Roskilde, Denmark, the festival takes place for almost a full 7 days from the end of June to the beginning of July and has featured some of the biggest names in rock such as Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Nine Inch Nails.
